The Bitter End, North Sound of Virgin Gorda
I first visited the Bitter End Yacht Club in 1988. I was sailing in the BVI as a guest of some very good friends who were really responsible for getting me into big boat sailing. The vibe of the place got into my soul, and I still can’t/won’t let it go.
BEYC today is different for sure. Hurricane Irma saw to that in 2018. That said BEYC 2.0 still has it for me. The beach bar, the Buoy Room and Clubhouse for dining, the Quarterdeck Club at the marina and the atmosphere all still hark back to the best of the BVI.
We recently visited for Thanksgiving and we are planning on going again in mid February. It’s in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda - you can’t miss it. For me, it’s definitely more of a ‘must do’ stop than Saba Rock nearby which, I think, has lost its way somewhat in the spirit of BVI shore side hangouts.
You have options - you can pick up a modestly priced mooring ball in the extensive North Sound mooring field and dinghy ashore, or you can take a berth at the Marina finger jetty for a larger price. Either way you should spend time at happy hour at the bar on the beach; you should have a decent dinner at the Bouy Room and you should think about ‘selectively’ restocking the fridge at their well stocked, albeit expensive, provisioning store. Coffee and croissants are available the next morning too.
The Bitter End is North Sound for me. Others may prefer something else, but for me the original is the best. Visit. You won’t be disappointed.
