It's all about the sunset really
There are many reasons to sail, or be on the water some other way, but up there near the top of the list has to be the sunsets!
Certain weather/cloud conditions contribute to a better sunset. Mid level and higher cloud are essential, as that allows a sort of ‘sky canopy’ to reflect the red and yellow light of the sunset back to earth. A good afternoon thunderstorm which clears out the haze, and other particles in the atmosphere, can also contribute to a spectacular experience.
One of the best sunsets we have seen in the BVI was when we were tied up alongside in the Scrub Island Resort marina. There had been a downpour in the afternoon and we were relaxing after an exciting process of getting alongside in the high wind and rain. The views that evening were spectacular!
Another great spot for a sunset in my view is the Cooper Island Beach Club. We have spent several evenings ashore there, looking out to the west over the peaceful mooring field and down the Sir Frances Drake channel towards the USVI. The views can be equally spectacular.
Afloat or ashore, make sure you are ready for the golden time of day when the light is at it’s best. Arm yourself with a painkiller, a bowl of snacks, and a camera to catch the moment. These evenings are just the icing on the cake of a terrific holiday.
